New Exhibits

The following temporary exhibits are now on display in addition to the permanent exhibits that chronicle high school, collegiate, professional, and Olympic sports in Georgia

The Art of Jack Davis

A world renowned cartoonist and co-creator of Mad magazine, Jack Davis has created many drawings that focus on the world of sports and the athletes who play them.  The “Art of Jack Davis” exhibit features a sampling of Davis’ artwork and showcases the artist’s ability to convey the lighter side of such sports as basketball, football, auto-racing, swimming, and golf.  A native of Georgia and a graduate of the University of Georgia, Davis has designed the covers for many UGA football programs; a collection of which are also featured in this exhibit.  Due to his many contributions to the field of sports-related illustrations, Jack Davis is this year’s recipient of the The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame’s “Erk Russell Spirit Award.”

Before the Braves: Professional Baseball in Georgia, 1885-1965

Before the Braves: Professional Baseball in Georgia, 1885-1965 traces the history of baseball in Georgia from the formation of the Southern League in 1885 to the arrival of the Braves in Atlanta nearly eighty years later. From baseball greats like Ty Cobb who first swung his bat in Augusta to lesser known players like Negro League all-star James “Joe” Greene, some of the best to ever play the game spent part of their careers with teams like the Atlanta Crackers, Macon Peaches, and Thomasville Tigers. Featuring baseballs, jerseys, equipment, programs, and photographs, the exhibit highlights the many baseball leagues, teams, and players that brought the national pastime to every corner of the Peach State.
